Mothers Unfolding
Mothers Unfolding is a set of 5 facilitated meetings with a group of mothers whose babies are 1-8 months old.
While there is a lot of support for new mothers on how to care for the newborn, there is no other program that directly deals with the intricacies of transitioning to motherhood. This is Mother care. Areas of discussion include dealing with the birth experience, relationship changes, identity as a mother, balancing one’s new life with a child, intuition, self care, and building community.
The group size is about 8, and all questions brought up in the sessions are met with respect and understanding. This allows for mutual trust and freedom to bring even private issues to the circle. Mothers Unfolding meetings are held with the babies present (most will eat and snooze through the meetings, but there are also toys and mats for more active babies).
Resulting from the heartfelt subject matter and experiences discussed in these groups, the participating mothers often bond strongly and keep meeting for months (sometimes years) after they met.
The cost of this program is $90 - $150 on a sliding scale with no questions asked. There is also a special group for single mothers. Locations include Pomegranate, Yoga on 7th and Sanga Yoga in Dunbar. This is a popular program and dates regularly sell out. Sign up on time – you can even pre-register while pregnant!
Mothers Unfolding is offered by Mama Renew, a business that also arranges retreats and classes for mothers of 1-17 year old children.
